Petrus Camper: A history and overview of the clinical importance of Camper's fascia in surgical anatomy

Petrus Camper was born in 1722 in the Netherlands to Dutch parents who met and married in Java, Indonesia. The internationally renowned physician Herman Boerhaave directed Camper’s early education oped an interest in the fields of anatomy and research, and he enrolled at the University of Leyden in 1734 at the age of 12.

Petrus Camper’s contributions to modern anatomical science include descriptions of the foot, upper limb, axilla, and inguinal region. In the picture below you can find Campers Chiasm, the split of the deep- and superficial flexor digitorum tendons. 

Camper’s multiple interests allowed him to contribute to a wide variety of scientific fields during his career.
